A true incident
The last part of the ongoing decision making series :)
What I am narrating below is a true incident. A friend of mine in Delhi freq travels by the metro. He is a Sikh, 6 feet in height and healthy looking chap. And he does not get afraid easily. It happened around republic day this year, the security is a bit extra in the capital around such days. This guy was wearing body-hug jeans, t shirt and a himesh-style cap. He fell a bit thirsty as he entered the station and went off to drink some water. In that part of the station, there was hardly a soul. While coming back from that area, he had to cross a police check area having some 8-10 cops on the station itself. Passing through the area, he had just gone 10 steps when he heard a shout "Rukiye". As he paused he saw 2 cops with guns drawn, pointing at him on either side. He told me that his first instinct was to run and his body instinctively took up that position. Bent forward, ready to sprint. But he did not run. Because in a flash he remembered the incident in England where a Brazilian ran from the cops and was shot dead.
It turned out both of his pant pockets were bulging Now in one pocket he kept his cell phone. He had brought a mp3 player and that was bulging in the second pocket. And that had raised all the suspicions. He emptied his pockets and managed to explain and show that it was a harmless device. He told me later that most probably his life was saved by knowing what happened to the other guy. He had only two choices. And he did not take the one which was instinctive.
This narration is not against instinctive choices. Simply, if you see a bus coming towards you, you would run, instinctively and that will save your life. This narration is only to tell that many times we have only 2 choices in life. And decision on which choice to take is taken in a fraction of milli-seconds. But that decision will be backed by some reason. We need to think clearly in our day-to-day lives and be open to ideas which might not suit us but still hold some value.
